Be Careful With This Vegetable!

I just wanted to get this quick note out if you haven’t heard yet! Although there are differing reports from various sources, there’s enough information to warrant the alert. E. coli O157:H7 has been implicated in recent sicknesses and deaths in Canada and the US. The states which have reported infections include: California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Vermont, and Washington state.

The implicated vegetable happens to be romaine lettuce. One big issue with it being romaine, or lettuce in general, is that it’s typically eaten raw. Without a high cooking point, this bacteria can survive all the way to your plate and eventually your blood stream. Again, reports aren’t conclusive, but it seems wise to avoid romaine until further notice.
